Periodens kunst er forbundet med de store omvæltninger og revolutionære strømninger, som den franske revolution i 1789 afstedkom.
Nyklassicismen, med dens interesse for antikkens stringente kunst og strenge idealer, afløste rokokoens lethed og elegance. Men allerede i 1800 blev nyklassicismen afløst af romantikken, der var anført af den engelske landskabsmaler Turner, der i sine revolutionerende og banebrydende billeder pegede 100 år frem til den abstrakte ekspressionisme.
Blandt periodens vigtigste kunstnere er David, Ingres, Goya, Blake, Turner, Constable, Delacroix, Corot, Friedrich og Courbet.
Art History 1770-1870
The art of the period is associated with the great changes and revolutionary currents caused by the French Revolution in 1789.
The New Classicism with its interest in the stringent art and strict ideals of the Antiquity succeeded the lightness and elegance of the Rococo. But already in the 18th century the New Classicism was succeeded by the Romanticism dominated by the English landscape painter Turner who in his revolutionary paintings pointed to the Abstract Expressionism 100 years later.
Among the most important artists are David, Ingres, Goya, Blake, Turner, Constable, Delacroix, Corot, Friedrich and Courbet.
